Be Humble, not Proud

 

Tips on understanding God's Word: Just reading the Bible or picking verses here and there like from a dictionary of quotations doesn't make much difference in our lives. What we need to do is think deeply about God's Word and how we can form a deeper relationship with Him (Josh 1:8).

For instance, I pondered on this at the weekend. 1 Pet 5:5 “God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” This is repeated in James 4:6 and both are taken from Prov 3:34. If we take this with the verses that follow (1 Pet 5:6-11), we can see that God only listens to those that humble themselves. If we worry about our problems or blame others for our circumstances, as Adam and Eve did (Gen 3:12,13), we are exhibiting pride.

How is this pride? Because we believe our complaints and worrying solve our problems and not God. Humility is about admitting that doing things our way and promoting self-importance, doesn't work. When we only think about ourselves first, we are unable to think about how our words and actions affect others, as Jesus commanded.

Therefore train your thoughts on Christ, and cast your cares onto God, not inward or onto others, and then the power of God can flow into your life by His grace and He alone will lift you up.

 A Tithe = a tenth. Although Jesus makes a reference to the tithe of the priests (Matthew 23:23), the tithe is only mentioned in detail in the Old Testament. Never is any reference to a tithe made in relation to the Christian believer under the New Covenant. Service First

JFK had it right when he said “Ask not what your country can do for you – ask what you can do for your country.” The life of the true Christian is one of service to others and putting the care of others before ourselves (1 Cor 10:24). God blesses people so that they may bless others. But we must also know that giving is better than receiving. Why? Because when we give of ourselves WITHOUT expectations of receiving anything in return (Phil 2:3-4), our Father blesses us greatly when we have faith that He will supply all our needs plus more to continue helping others (2 Corinthians 9:8). Therefore do not be anxious, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the Gentiles seek after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them all. Service, the gift of prosperity

We are told in Joshua 1:8, "This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success." Prosperity and success are much more than money and possessions, it's about healthy relationships that complete each other, knowing your purpose, serving others at work and socially, in the knowledge that you are serving God. You see, "no one should seek their own good, but the good of others." (1 Cor 10:24). This is part of the essence of the law that Jesus commanded us to observe. This makes me look at my present study notes on the "Shema" (Deut 6:4-6), “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one.
